Insurance claims from the Victorian bushfires have topped $800 million.
The Insurance Council of Australia says 60 per cent of Victorian claims have been assessed.

Indian police have charged a man identified as the lone surviving gunman in last year’s Mumbai attacks with “waging war” against India, drawing up the first formal charges in the case, local television channels said.
Two national television channels said the the charge sheet named 19 other people, including Indians and Pakistanis, with planning and abetting the attacks that killed 179 people and revived tensions between India and Pakistan. (more…)

Australian banks have turned down an offer by Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) to raise money for its Pilbara mining operation.

The Australian Industry Group (AIG) says the decline of Pacific Brands highlights the difficulty of sustaining a local clothes manufacturing industry.
The maker of brands like Bonds, Sheridan, King Gee, Jockey and Holeproof is slashing 1,850 jobs - almost 40 per cent of its local work force - and closing seven factories. (more…)

The Federal Government says it is investigating whether Iraqi soldiers who rescued engineer Australian Douglas Wood from kidnappers in Baghdad have asked to live in Australia.
Seven of the Iraqi soldiers who dramatically saved Mr Wood in June 2005 have been killed in “payback” attacks attributed to Al Qaeda. (more…)

A Turkish Airlines plane has crashed on landing at Amsterdam’s Schiphol international airport, killing nine people and injuring at least 50 people.
The plane, with at least 134 passengers on board, crashed short of the runway near the A9 motorway and broke into three pieces, but did not catch fire.
Witnesses spoke of seeing at least 20 passengers walking from the wreckage of Flight 1951. (more…)

Japan’s exports plunged 45.7% in January compared with a year ago to hit the lowest figure in 10 years, official figures have shown.
Imports exceeded exports by 952.6bn yen ($9.9bn; £6.8bn). It is the largest gap since records began in 1980.
